About

When I'm not working for pay, I'm usually building software nobody asked for. I have a small graveyard of side projects — a Markdown editor, a timeline tool for writers, a Zettelkasten app, a game — most of which exist because I wanted to play with certain technologies and thought why not, and sometimes I just want to explore design patterns and libraries. Harder than all that, I'm also writing a novel, which has taught me that a blank page is significantly more intimidating than a blank main method. Outside the keyboard I teach lessons and lead discussions at church, and spend a lot of time on the correct answer to "what's for dinner." I started my career as an armored crewman on an M1A1, which means I've been responsible for both a sixty-ton tank and a production deployment, and I'll let you guess which one made me more nervous.

Skills & Tech

Over more than 25 years I've worked across most of the web stack as it evolved. I started in C++ and Authorware, moved into Java EE and the technologies that surrounded it — Struts, Spring, JSP, JPA/Hibernate, JMS, SOAP and REST — and worked through the front-end generations from JSP and Ajax to Flex/Flash, jQuery, Knockout, AngularJS, and modern Angular. Along the way I've built on Oracle, MS SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB and DynamoDB, deployed to Docker, OpenShift, and now AWS, and worked with Keycloak, OKTA, iVIA and other identity tooling. My current work is Angular on the front end, serverless Python and Java services on AWS with components running in EKS, plus authentication and authorization, WebSockets, and load testing. I have experience with a wide range of libraries and technologies, my breadth of experience helps me gauge technologies and helps me plan actionable designs and evaluate.

Experience

I started in the U.S. Army as an armored crewman on the M1A1 before moving into technology support at the battalion and brigade S-3. After the Army I wrote pieces of the 2000 Highway Capacity Software for Catalina Engineering under contract to the Transportation Research Board, then built internal applications and maintained servers at Gain Technology. I spent twelve years at Raytheon Missile Systems, moving from administering a test lab in a closed area to application architect, mentoring developers and leading teams, and earning a patent for textual document analysis using word cloud comparison. At Aviture I worked on the SIRIS and Skynet drone mission planning and tracking systems, and at WoodmenLife I supervised the PAS Interfaces team of seven building enterprise services on OpenShift. Since 2018 I've been with the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City — first as lead software engineer on the Shared National Credit (SNC) and CDFI Information Mapping System (CIMS) programs and the Supervision Central product, and since 2021 as solution architect on the Debt Financing System (DFS) project replacing the Treasuries TAAPS solution.
